The Madison 56ers came out firing Saturday night against Eau Claire Aris FC, and never really stopped.
From a blast by UW-Green Bay midfielder Anthony Santaga (Green Bay Notre Dame) in the opening seconds to a goal by North Carolina's Carlos McCrary in second-half stoppage time, it was an all-around impressive display.
Veteran striker Jed Hohlbein (Middleton/UW) had a hat trick as the 56ers matched their NPSL record for goals in a game with a 9-0 rout of Aris FC in a Midwest Division match at Bollinger Fields.
Seven players scored for Madison (3-1-2 overall, 3-1-1 NPSL Midwest), which beat Aris FC 9-1 last season in Eau Claire.
"I'm not sure they were really that bad, we were really on," said 56ers coach Jim Launder, whose team was without its leading scorer, Marquette forward Adam Lysak (Milton), because of shin splints. "They're a lot better than last year. But we were all over them.
"Their goalie actually made several very good saves, to give you an indication of how we played."
Aris FC goalkeeper Troy Osborne managed to stop Santaga's drive from 15 yards out about 20 seconds in – "I couldn't believe he saved that," Launder said – but it was just the start of a long night for the Australian keeper, who plays at Iowa Wesleyan.
Midfielder Andrew Wiedabach (Mequon Homestead) opened the scoring after a combination with Hohlbein in the eighth minute, and Hohlbein scored in the 14th and 41st before midfielder Trevor Banks (Madison Memorial) came up with the goal of the night off a ball from his younger brother Cody.
"He got a great cross from his brother and hit a volley so fast the goalie couldn't even move," Launder said of the shot from 15 yards out. "Right out of the air, he just snapped it off."
Hohlbein finished off his third hat trick for the 56ers in the 52nd minute. He has four goals this season and 45 in his career, easily the most since the NPSL program was launched in 2005.
Santaga, denied on his quality chance early, got one past Osborne in the 64th before William Bagayoko (UW), Kenyon's Keith Dangarembwa and McCrary all came off the bench and scored in the final 10 minutes. It was the first goal of the year for all four; Bagayoko was making his season debut after coming back from a groin injury.
"I said at halftime, 'I don't care what the score is, I just want us to play properly,' and indeed we did," said Launder, whose team played with 10 men for the final minutes as UW defender Colin Mani (Madison Edgewood) came off with a blister after all seven substitutions had been made.
UW keeper Max Jentsch (Hartland Arrowhead) made three saves to post his second shutout in three starts for the 56ers, who play the Quad City Eagles next Sunday in Moline, Ill. Two days later, they play host to Chicago's AAC Eagles in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Breese Stevens Field.
