If the Madison 56ers advance to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup, they would get to play in the country's newest soccer stadium.
The winner of Tuesday's second-round match between the 56ers and the Chicago Fire Premier Development League team will play Major League Soccer's Sporting Kansas City on June 28 in Kansas City, Kan., the U.S. Soccer Federation announced today.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Livestrong Sporting Park, a $200 million, state-of-the-art stadium that opened last week to rave reviews.
The 56ers and Fire PDL meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Breese Stevens Field for the right to play Sporting Kansas City, which is 2-6-4 and has an MLS-low 10 points. Scott Lorenz (UW), who played for the 56ers during his college career, is a reserve left back for the team previously known as the Kansas City Wizards.
Madison scored four times in a late 14-minute span to beat Chicago's AAC Eagles 4-0 in the first round Tuesday, while the Fire PDL got an 87th-minute goal from Chris Estridge to tip fellow PDL side Des Moines Menace 1-0.
